Because that's one of Batman's monikers. One of Batman's original nicknames was the Darknight Detective, which eventually morphed into The Dark Knight.



It's the movie title probably because Batman is a crusader against evil, and knights have sometimes been crusaders.

Christian Bale has already portrayed Batman and other titles that would work have already been used with other actors in the lead role: Batman, Batman Returns, etc. So they went for something that he is also known by because it's different from the rest.What is the reason the new batman movie is called the dark knight?

One of the most popular Bat Man grapic novels was Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and Frank Miller's work is largely the inspiration for the new Bat Man franchise.
Leaning more toward Frank Millers depiction of Batman. Darker, less goofy, and I wonder it Heath plays that whole "sort of in love with batman" type of role. That would be very interesting.
